There are games, and then there is Grand Theft Auto VI. After twelve years of waiting, Rockstar Games has delivered something that doesn't just meet the astronomical expectations — it exceeds them in ways that feel genuinely impossible until you're playing it. GTA VI on PlayStation 5 is the most technically impressive, narratively ambitious, and sheer fun open-world game ever made.
Welcome Back to Vice City
GTA VI is set in a reimagined Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida — a fictionalised Florida that encompasses swamps, beaches, suburbs, rural highways, and a sprawling metropolitan area that dwarfs anything Rockstar has built before. The map is approximately three times the size of GTA V's Los Santos, and every square metre feels handcrafted.
The city breathes in a way no open world has before. Businesses open and close on real schedules. Weather systems develop over hours, with hurricanes that genuinely reshape the landscape. NPCs have daily routines, remember interactions, and react to your reputation. Walk into a convenience store you robbed last week and the clerk will recognise you.
Lucia: A Protagonist Worth Caring About
For the first time in the mainline series, GTA VI features a female protagonist. Lucia Caminos is a career criminal fresh out of prison, navigating Vice City's criminal underworld alongside her partner Jason. The dual-protagonist structure echoes GTA V, but the writing here is sharper, the performances are better, and the relationship between Lucia and Jason gives the story genuine emotional weight.
The story takes approximately 40 hours to complete and features some of the most spectacular set-pieces in gaming history — a hurricane heist sequence in the third act is the single most technically impressive thing I've seen in a video game.
Gameplay: Everything, Refined
The shooting mechanics have been completely rebuilt, borrowing from Red Dead Redemption 2's weight and physicality. Cover is now contextual — you can lean around corners, blind fire, and perform takedowns without breaking flow. The driving model is the best in the series: cars feel distinct, heavy, and satisfying to push to their limits.
New to GTA VI is the Hustle System — a reputation mechanic that tracks how you interact with Vice City's various factions. Build rep with the Leonida Cartel and they'll provide safe houses and backup. Cross them and they'll put a bounty on your head. It adds a layer of consequence to free-roam that GTA V never had.
How to Play GTA VI: Getting Started
Story Mode First: Resist the urge to free-roam immediately. The story unlocks mechanics, safe houses, vehicles, and contacts that make free-roam dramatically more enjoyable. Complete at least the first six missions before going off-script.
Money Management: Unlike GTA V, money is tight in the early game. Prioritise buying a second safe house (the Oceanfront Apartment is the best early purchase at $45,000) and a reliable getaway car before spending on weapons or cosmetics.
The Hustle System: Check your faction rep in the phone's Social menu. Maintaining neutral or positive rep with at least two major factions makes the mid-game significantly easier. The Leonida Cartel and the Vice City PD (yes, you can build rep with the police through legitimate activities) are the most useful early alliances.
Wanted Level: The new five-star wanted system is more dynamic than previous games. At three stars, police set up roadblocks. At four, SWAT deploys. At five, military helicopters and armoured vehicles respond. Losing a wanted level now requires actually hiding — driving into a parking garage and waiting is no longer sufficient. Change vehicles, change clothes, and move to a different district.
GTA Online: GTA VI Online launches three months after the single-player game. It will support up to 32 players in Vice City and feature a new persistent business system. If you played GTA V Online, your character's appearance and some cosmetics will transfer.
PS5 Technical Performance
GTA VI on PS5 offers three modes: Fidelity (4K/30fps, ray tracing enabled), Performance (1440p/60fps, reduced ray tracing), and Performance RT (1080p/60fps, full ray tracing). Performance RT is the recommended mode — the ray-traced reflections on Vice City's wet streets at night are breathtaking, and 60fps makes the driving feel alive.
Load times are virtually non-existent thanks to the PS5's SSD. Fast travel between safe houses takes under two seconds. The game has crashed once in 60+ hours of play — rock solid stability.
Verdict
GTA VI is a generational achievement. It's the game that justifies owning a PlayStation 5, the game that will be referenced as a benchmark for the next decade, and the most fun I've had playing a video game in years. The wait was worth it.
Score: 10/10 — A masterpiece. The new standard for open-world gaming.
