The original Apple Vision Pro was a remarkable piece of technology that almost nobody bought. It weighed too much, cost too much, and lasted too little. The Vision Pro 2 fixes all three problems — and in doing so, transforms spatial computing from a curiosity into a product category with genuine mainstream potential. After four weeks of daily use, I can say with confidence: this is the first spatial computing device I would recommend to someone who isn't a technology enthusiast.

The Hardware: What Changed

At 450g, the Vision Pro 2 is 200g lighter than its predecessor — a difference that is immediately and profoundly noticeable. The original Vision Pro caused neck fatigue within 30–45 minutes for most users; the Vision Pro 2 is comfortable for 2–3 hour sessions. Apple achieved this through a combination of a new magnesium-aluminium alloy frame, a redesigned optical module that uses fewer but more efficient components, and a new dual-battery system that distributes weight more evenly across the head.

The new M4 chip and redesigned battery architecture deliver 8 hours of mixed-use battery life, up from 2.5 hours. This is the single most important improvement. The original Vision Pro's 2.5-hour battery life meant it was fundamentally a demonstration device — you couldn't use it for a full workday. The Vision Pro 2 can last a full working session, which changes what it's useful for.

The price has dropped to $2,499 — still expensive, but within reach of serious professionals. For context, a high-end ultrawide monitor setup with comparable screen real estate costs $1,500–2,000 and takes up significant desk space. The Vision Pro 2's virtual display capability — which can create a workspace with the equivalent of three 27-inch 4K monitors — starts to look competitive on a total cost basis.

The Display: A Genuine Leap

The micro-OLED displays have been upgraded to 4K per eye at 120Hz, with a new "Spatial HDR" mode that maps real-world lighting conditions to virtual content in real time. The result is virtual objects that cast accurate shadows and reflections based on the actual light sources in your environment — a subtle but transformative improvement to immersion.

Text rendering is now sharp enough for extended reading and coding. This was a significant limitation of the original Vision Pro — text at reading distance was slightly soft, causing eye strain during extended use. The Vision Pro 2's display resolves this completely. I spent several days writing and editing in the Vision Pro 2's virtual workspace and experienced no more eye strain than I would from a high-quality physical monitor.

visionOS 3: The Software Catches Up

The software has matured significantly. The new "Spatial Collaboration" feature allows multiple Vision Pro users to share a virtual workspace, seeing each other's virtual screens and manipulating shared 3D objects. For remote teams, this is the closest thing to being in the same room that technology has yet achieved — and it works remarkably well in practice.

The app ecosystem has grown substantially. Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and the full suite of professional creative tools now have native visionOS versions. The new "Immersive Environments" feature — which replaces your physical surroundings with a virtual environment — has been expanded with 40 new environments, including several designed specifically for focus work.

What Still Needs Work

The Vision Pro 2 is not without limitations. The hand-tracking interface, while impressive, is still slower than a physical keyboard and mouse for text-heavy work. Apple's solution — a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad that work seamlessly with the headset — is functional but adds to the setup complexity. Eye strain remains a concern for some users after extended sessions, though significantly reduced from the original.

The social dimension of wearing a headset in public or shared spaces remains awkward. The EyeSight feature — which displays a representation of your eyes on the front of the headset — has been improved, but it still reads as uncanny to people who aren't familiar with the device.

The Verdict

The Vision Pro 2 is the first spatial computing device that delivers on the category's promise. It's still expensive and still niche — but it's no longer a prototype. For professionals who spend significant time in front of multiple monitors, it's a genuinely compelling alternative. For creative professionals working with 3D content, it's transformative. And as a preview of where personal computing is heading, it's the most interesting product Apple has shipped since the original iPhone.
