Apple's iPhone Pro Max has been the benchmark for smartphone performance since the A-series chips pulled decisively ahead of the competition, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max continues that tradition with the A19 Pro — a chip so fast it makes the question of "is this phone powerful enough?" permanently irrelevant for any consumer use case.

A19 Pro: The Performance Ceiling Rises Again

Built on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, the A19 Pro delivers a 25% CPU performance improvement and 30% GPU improvement over the A18 Pro. In Geekbench 6, it scores 3,800 single-core and 9,200 multi-core — numbers that beat most laptop processors. The 16-core Neural Engine processes 38 trillion operations per second, enabling Apple Intelligence features that run entirely on-device: Writing Tools, Image Playground, and the new Visual Intelligence system that can identify objects, translate text, and provide contextual information from the camera viewfinder in real time.

Camera System

The 48MP main camera with second-generation sensor-shift OIS and a new f/1.54 aperture captures more light than any previous iPhone. The 12MP 5× periscope telephoto and 48MP ultrawide complete a system that leads the industry in video quality. ProRes 4K at 120fps — previously requiring an external SSD — now records directly to the 1TB internal storage. The new 48MP front camera with autofocus is a significant upgrade for video calls and selfies.

Design & Display

The new titanium-aluminium alloy frame is lighter than pure titanium while maintaining the same premium feel. The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR ProMotion display (2868×1320, 1–120Hz) reaches 2,000 nits typical brightness and 4,000 nits peak — the brightest iPhone display ever. The Action Button and Camera Control button are now standard across the Pro lineup.

Battery Life

Apple claims 33 hours of video playback, and real-world mixed use delivers 10–12 hours of screen-on time — the best battery life of any iPhone. The 30W MagSafe charger (sold separately) recovers 50% in 30 minutes.

Verdict

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the best smartphone available. At $1,199, it's expensive, but it delivers the best performance, the best camera system, the best display, and the longest software support (six years) of any phone on the market. If you're in the Apple ecosystem and want the best, there's no decision to make.

Apple Intelligence: What It Actually Does

Apple Intelligence is no longer a promise — it's a mature, genuinely useful suite of on-device AI features. Writing Tools can rewrite, proofread, and summarise text in any app. Image Playground generates custom images from text descriptions in seconds. The new Visual Intelligence system — accessed by holding the Camera Control button — can identify objects, plants, animals, and text in the camera viewfinder and provide instant contextual information. It's Shazam for the physical world.

Siri's integration with third-party apps has deepened significantly. It can now take actions across apps — booking a restaurant reservation, sending a message with an attachment, or setting a reminder based on email content — without requiring you to switch between apps. The "Personal Context" feature allows Siri to understand your schedule, relationships, and preferences to provide more relevant responses, all processed on-device for privacy.

ProRes Video and Camera Control

The Camera Control button — a physical capacitive button on the right side of the phone — provides direct access to the camera and enables precise control over zoom, exposure, and focus without touching the screen. For videographers, it's a genuine improvement over on-screen controls, enabling smoother zoom pulls and more precise focus adjustments.

ProRes 4K at 120fps recording directly to internal storage is the headline video feature. The resulting files are large — a minute of ProRes 4K 120fps occupies approximately 6GB — but the quality is extraordinary. For professional video creators who want to shoot slow-motion footage with maximum post-production flexibility, this capability was previously only available with an external SSD.

Ecosystem Integration

The iPhone 17 Pro Max's greatest advantage over Android competitors is ecosystem integration. AirDrop transfers files to Macs and iPads instantly. Handoff lets you start a task on iPhone and continue on Mac. Universal Clipboard shares copied content across all Apple devices. AirPlay streams video to Apple TV or compatible displays. For users with a Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch, these integrations create a seamless experience that Android cannot replicate.

The Competition

The iPhone 17 Pro Max's main competition is the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra ($1,299) and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL ($1,099). Against Samsung, it wins on performance, software longevity, and ecosystem integration — but loses on display size and the S Pen. Against the Pixel, it wins on performance, ecosystem, and app quality — but loses on price and AI feature depth. For users already in the Apple ecosystem, the choice is straightforward. For Android users considering a switch, the ecosystem lock-in is the primary consideration.
