Blue Origin has spent 26 years and an estimated $20 billion of Jeff Bezos's personal fortune building rockets. For most of that time, the company was the butt of industry jokes — a well-funded also-ran that had never reached orbit while SpaceX was landing boosters and launching astronauts. That narrative is now changing, rapidly.
New Glenn, Blue Origin's heavy-lift orbital rocket, completed its third successful flight in May 2026, delivering a 12-tonne payload to geostationary transfer orbit. Two weeks later, NASA announced that Blue Origin had won the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contract for five lunar cargo missions between 2027 and 2035, with a total value of $3.4 billion.
New Glenn's Technical Credentials
New Glenn is a two-stage rocket standing 98 metres tall, capable of delivering 45 tonnes to low Earth orbit or 13 tonnes to geostationary transfer orbit. Its first stage is powered by seven BE-4 engines burning liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas — the same engines that power United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur rocket. The first stage is designed to be reusable, landing on a ship at sea after each flight.
The third flight demonstrated first-stage recovery for the first time, with the booster landing on Blue Origin's recovery ship, Jacklyn, in the Atlantic Ocean. The landing was not perfect — the booster touched down with a slight lateral velocity that caused minor damage to one landing leg — but it was successful enough to be refurbished and reflown.
The Lunar Cargo Missions
The NASA contract calls for Blue Origin to deliver scientific instruments, technology demonstrations, and precursor hardware for the Artemis programme to the lunar surface. The first mission, scheduled for 2027, will land a suite of geophysical instruments near the lunar south pole — the region NASA has identified as the primary target for crewed Artemis landings due to its proximity to water ice deposits.
Blue Origin will use its Blue Moon lander, a vehicle it has been developing since 2019, for the deliveries. The Mark 2 version of Blue Moon, which will be used for the NASA missions, can deliver up to 4.5 tonnes to the lunar surface — enough to carry a small pressurised habitat module or a lunar rover.
The Competitive Landscape
Blue Origin's lunar contract win puts it in direct competition with SpaceX, which holds the Human Landing System contract for Artemis III, and with Astrobotic and Intuitive Machines, which have been conducting smaller CLPS missions since 2024. The lunar economy is becoming genuinely competitive, with multiple companies offering different capabilities at different price points.
"We're seeing the commercialisation of the Moon happen in real time," said Casey Dreier, chief of space policy at The Planetary Society. "Five years ago, lunar missions were exclusively the domain of national space agencies. Now we have a half-dozen commercial companies competing for lunar contracts."
What This Means for the Space Industry
Blue Origin's emergence as a credible heavy-lift provider is significant for the industry beyond the lunar context. New Glenn competes directly with SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy for commercial satellite launches, and its entry into the market is already putting downward pressure on launch prices. United Launch Alliance, which has historically dominated the US government launch market, now faces competition from two well-funded commercial providers.
For Jeff Bezos, the NASA contract validates a 26-year investment that has tested the patience of even his most loyal supporters. "We're just getting started," he said at a company all-hands meeting following the contract announcement. For once, the space industry is inclined to believe him.
New Glenn's Reusability Record
The first-stage recovery on New Glenn's third flight was a significant milestone, but Blue Origin's reusability ambitions go further. The company is targeting a 10-flight reuse rate for the New Glenn first stage — meaning each booster should be capable of flying 10 times before retirement. Achieving this requires the booster to land within a tight accuracy envelope and to withstand the thermal and mechanical stresses of re-entry without significant refurbishment.
SpaceX's Falcon 9 has demonstrated 20+ reuses on some boosters, setting a high bar. Blue Origin's BE-4 engines — which power New Glenn — were designed with reusability in mind, and early post-flight inspections suggest the engines are in better condition than expected after the first recovery. The path to 10 reuses appears achievable, though it will require several more flights to confirm.
