Amazon's fulfilment centre in Kemps Creek, Western Sydney, looks like a normal warehouse from the outside. Inside, it's something else entirely. Hundreds of orange Kiva robots glide silently across the floor, carrying shelving pods to human pickers who stand at fixed stations. Robotic arms sort packages onto conveyor belts. Autonomous mobile robots ferry totes between workstations. And in a cordoned-off section, a dozen Digit humanoid robots are learning to move totes from conveyor belts to storage racks.
The Scale of Amazon's Robotics Operation
Amazon operates more than 750,000 robots across its global fulfilment network — more than any other company in the world. The fleet includes Kiva drive units (the orange shelf-moving robots), Sparrow robotic arms (which pick individual items from bins), Cardinal robotic arms (which sort packages by destination), and the newest addition: Digit humanoid robots from Agility Robotics, of which Amazon has ordered 10,000 units.
The economic case for this investment is straightforward. Amazon's fulfilment network processes 40 million packages per day. Each percentage point of efficiency improvement translates to hundreds of millions of dollars in annual savings. Robots don't call in sick, don't require breaks, and can work in conditions — extreme temperatures, high noise levels, repetitive motion — that cause human injury.
How Human-Robot Collaboration Actually Works
The reality of Amazon's warehouses is more nuanced than the "robots replacing humans" narrative suggests. The current generation of robots handles specific, well-defined tasks — moving shelves, sorting packages, picking items from bins — while humans handle the tasks that require judgement, dexterity, and adaptability. The result is a hybrid workforce where humans and robots work in close proximity, each handling the tasks they do best.
Amazon's data shows that facilities with the highest robot density also have the highest human productivity — because robots handle the physically demanding, repetitive tasks that cause fatigue and injury, allowing human workers to focus on higher-value activities. Injury rates in robotics-enabled facilities are 15% lower than in non-robotics facilities, according to Amazon's own data.
The Jobs Question
Amazon has added more than 200,000 jobs since deploying its first Kiva robots in 2012 — a fact the company cites frequently. But the nature of those jobs has changed. The introduction of robots has eliminated some roles (stowers who walk miles per shift moving inventory) while creating others (robot technicians, process engineers, area managers). The net employment effect has been positive so far — but the trajectory of humanoid robot deployment raises harder questions about the medium-term future.
What's Next: The Humanoid Bet
Amazon's investment in Agility Robotics and its order of 10,000 Digit robots represents a bet that humanoid robots will be commercially viable for warehouse tasks within three years. The current Digit deployment is a pilot — the robots are performing a single, well-defined task (tote movement) under close human supervision. But the learning curve is steep, and Amazon's scale gives it an unparalleled platform for training and deploying the next generation of warehouse automation.
Worker Response and Union Concerns
The introduction of robots into Amazon's warehouses has not been without controversy. The Transport Workers' Union and the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association have raised concerns about the pace of automation and its implications for their members. Amazon's response — that robots are creating new jobs and improving safety — is technically accurate but misses the distributional concern: the new jobs (robot technicians, process engineers) require different skills and often pay more, while the displaced jobs (stowers, pickers) were accessible to workers without advanced qualifications.
The most constructive response to this tension is the approach Amazon has taken in some facilities: retraining programs that help existing workers transition to robot maintenance and oversight roles. The company's Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship program has trained over 5,000 workers in robot maintenance skills. Whether this scales to match the pace of automation is the critical question.
